Artist Statement

My body of work uses art as a lens to observe and appreciate the transient beauty of nature.

In my work, I focus on highlighting and reconnecting with nature's transient beauty by taking inspiration from Impressionism. I render these images with acrylics and gouache, transforming photographs captured in different landscapes I have visited.Taking influence from the Impressionism movement, I approach my paintings with a focus on the lights and colours seen in an environment with broad immediate brushstrokes painted in layers. Through this, I use the illusion of colours layered together to form the images one sees.

My fascination with nature stems from the forests I would drive past in Malawi when visiting the village in my childhood. As this is a significant part of my memories, I strive to evoke the sensation of trees fleetingly flashing by the car windows, a transient motif that resonates throughout my work.

The Verdant Light series features these paintings. Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's poem “Light, My Light, The World-Filling Light,” these paintings focus on capturing the lights and colours of a moment in nature suspended in time. These paintings give space to reconnect with the experience in each environment, reflecting on the relationship between myself and the landscapes, as well as my unique perspective of them.
My work is an ode to the ever-changing existence of nature and the importance it places on one’s life.
